"(de)Color-Es"

(de) Color-Es

Saturday, April 29

5PM & 8:30PM

(de) Color-Es is an event that brings artists of color together to highlight the multifaceted and multimedia depictions of minoritarian art and artmaking. We highlight, question, and consider what it means to be an artist of color and how that shows up the world, how we contend with it, how we craft in, beyond, through, and with it. In doing so, (de) Color-Es works to build networks of connectivity between different forms of artmakers, art genres, artistry, and art localities, centering this coalition as an evening of radical performance.

This year's artists include: DJ TiffStarr, Kati Hernandez, Frine Garrey y Jorge Santana, Marina Magalhães, Stephen Tanner & Aisha Bardge, and Magnolia Yang Sao Yia.

There will be two performance times: 5PM & 8:30PM.

These performances are free and open to the public. If it is in your means, a donation is encouraged so that we can continue to develop equitable programming.

This event is made possible from generous funding from the California Arts Council Cycle Grant A and collaborative work by members of Primera Generación Dance Collective and Show Box L.A.

“For the problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color-line . . . the relation of the darker to the lighter races of men . . . And yet, being a problem is a strange experience,— peculiar even for one who has never been anything else.” –W.E.B. Du Bois, The Souls of Black Folk (1903)

An institution in the dance world since the 1980s, the acclaimed Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Company’s latest work, What Problem?, explores the tension between belonging to a community and the feelings of isolation that many feel during these divisive political times. Adapted for proscenium stages from the massive work Deep Blue Sea (2021), Jones conceived of this highly personal project in pursuit of the elusive “we,” including a cast of local community members, a deconstructed text from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech and Herman Melville’s Moby Dick. Jones and the company develop individual content with approximately 25 local community members in each of the touring locations, making each performance specific to its host city.

What Problem? explores collective redemption. The work is divided into three sections: the first section focuses on one person, Bill; in the second section the lone person is joined by the company of ten performers; in the third section the company is joined by the community. Participants will be invited to generate material and structures through guided improvisations and task-based instructions, which will become the vocabulary for the third section. The work will be unique to each community and the set of questions and instructions will be shaped by whom the participants are.

Please join us on the Royce Hall Terrace immediately following the performance for a Town Hall Discussion with Bill T. Jones, his company of dancers and local community participants. Light refreshments will be served.

ABOUT CLASS: Diaspora is a complex word that signifies both place and displacement, connection and disconnection, memory and futurity. This dance class seeks to translate these ideas into the body — how can we embody principles of Latin & African diasporic dance practices while exploring our own unique expression? How can we simultaneously embrace rigor and instinct, tradition and creativity, ancestry and individuality? The class frames these seemingly disparate ideas as complimentary and necessary for a collective practice of dance-and-change-making. Dancers are encouraged to cultivate an intimate relationship with the ground, a mobile spine and expressive pelvis, playful improvisation, and deep musicality.

All bodies and levels of experience welcome. Come ready to sweat and play!

$5 suggested donation via Venmo & PayPal.

ABOUT MARINA: Marina Magalhães is a border-crosser, bridge-builder, and dance-and-change-maker from Brazil based in Los Angeles. Her work is centered around diasporic decolonial notions of the body as a crossroads where the individual meets the ancestral, memory meets futurity, and spirit meets flesh. She has shared her work throughout the US, Brazil, Cuba, Botswana, South Africa, Germany, and France earning her an LA Weekly Theater Award for Best Choreography. Magalhães is a graduate of UCLA’s World Arts & Cultures/Dance Department, where she earned her B.A. degree, and University of the Arts’s Dance Department, where she earned her MFA degree. She is currently a Lecturer at Scripps College, a Resident Artist at Pieter Space, and founder of the Dancing Diaspora platform now going on its 4th year with the support of California Arts Council.

Cash & Venmo donations encouraged at the door.

Marina Magalhães is a border-crosser, bridge-builder, and dance-and-change-maker from Brazil based in Los Angeles. Magalhães is a graduate of UCLA’s World Arts & Cultures/Dance Department, where she earned her B.A. degree, and University of the Arts’s Dance Department, where she earned her MFA degree. TRAVEL TIPS
If you are not a Brazilian citizen or a citizen of one of the countries in the Mercosul coalition (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay), you’ll need to obtain a tourist visa to travel to Brazil. You may do so by making an appointment at the nearest Brazilian Consulate — in the United States there are consulates in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, New York City, Chicago, Miami, Boston, Hartford CT, Atlanta, Houston, and Norfolk VA. If you live outside of the US, you can find Brazilian consulates in virtually every capital city and most major cities. We recommend making an appointment as soon as possible as it can take weeks and sometimes months for a visa to be issued.

We also recommend you book your flight well ahead of time, as prices can hike up fast. In order to participate in Day 1 of the program on Jun 23, your flight must arrive on or before Dec Jun 22. Your housing will be provided by CTO for the period of Jun 22-July 6 (you will be responsible for housing prior and after this period if you plan on staying in Brazil longer than the duration of the program).

NOTE
Registrations for the December 2019 International Training will open in July. To be put on the waiting list for registration of that program, please contact CTOenglishtraining@gmail.com

This FREE dance class seeks to translate these ideas into the body — how can we embody principles of Afro-Latin dance practices while exploring our own unique expression? How can we embrace rigor and instinct, tradition and creativity, ancestry and individuality? Dancers are encouraged to cultivate an intimate relationship with the ground, a mobile spine and expressive pelvis, playful improvisation, and deep musicality.
